New Fellowship Prepares Next Generation of Pediatric Radiologists

Richmond, VA - February 2024 - The VCU Department of Radiology is excited to introduce a new fellowship in Pediatric Radiology at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. The fellowship offers a balanced curriculum that integrates comprehensive clinical training with research and teaching in the specialized field of pediatric radiology.

The Pediatric Radiology fellowship, under the direction of program director Eman Mahdi, M.D., is a new fellowship aimed at graduating the next generation of pediatric radiologists who excel at providing the highest quality of care to pediatric patients within the communities they serve.

Our fellows will thrive under the mentorship of our exceptional faculty, a close-knit team dedicated to delivering superior pediatric care. At the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, fellows will be immersed in a learning environment equipped with cutting-edge technology and supported by an extensive network of subspecialty-trained experts. We are committed to ensuring our fellows excel in managing both routine and complex cases, leaving our program with the confidence and versatility to excel in any setting," says Dr. Eman Mahdi.

The fellows will train under the supervision of experienced radiologists, using the latest medical advances in procedures and technology to improve their skills in providing excellent radiological care. At the completion of the one-year program, fellows will be qualified to practice in the subspecialty field of pediatric radiology.

Mahdi further explains, "The initiation of our Pediatric Radiology fellowship is a milestone in enhancing vital radiological services. Our program is a beacon for aspiring radiologists eager to make a significant impact in pediatric care. With the recent expansion of the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, our fellows are positioned at the forefront of pediatric health, benefiting from unparalleled resources and collaborative opportunities across every pediatric subspecialty. Our program is not just about training; it's about empowering the next generation of radiologists with the skills, confidence, and compassion to lead and innovate in the field."

Dr. Ann Fulcher Elected Third Woman President-Elect of SCARD

Fulcher, M.D., chair of the Department of Radiology, has been elected as president-elect to the Board of Directors of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD) at the organization's Oct. 19-20, 2023 Annual Fall Meeting. At the end of the term, the president-elect transitions to the position of president making Dr. Fulcher the third woman president of SCARD, as well as the first person in the leadership role to represent Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University.

“What an honor and privilege it is to have the opportunity to serve in a leadership position in SCARD and to represent our Department of Radiology, VCU Health, and VCU,” Fulcher said. “This position allows us to have a voice in the manner in which we confront challenges facing U.S. academic radiology practices, such as the critical shortage of radiologists and technologists and the growing role of AI.”

Founded in 1966, SCARD is a nonprofit organization comprised of chairs from academic radiology departments who are dedicated to the advancement of the art and science of radiology.
