PERSONAL STATEMENT

Since becoming an attending physician at VCU, my focus has been on improving the quality of patient care provided at the institution through education, clinical practice and administration. Within six months of arriving at Virginia Commonwealth University, when there was only one other attending and a single fellow, I worked with Curtis Hayes M.D. on the creation and implementation of a comprehensive curriculum for our residents. As we have grown in size to five radiologists since I became section Director, this has remained a valued resource to our residents. To improve the quality of our patient imaging, I spearheaded the creation of protocol handbooks and technologist in-services in 2011 for MRI and CT, since updated in 2018 that are a valued resource for technologists and have improved the quality of imaging. To provide more uniform reporting and actionable information to our referring providers, I collaborated with my section members and department billing and compliance staff on the development of dictation templates that have been used since 2013.

To instill the importance of improving patient care, I have mentored medical students, residents, fellows and attendings on projects to improve the quality of overnight, independent resident study interpretations, the value of MRI in determining care of pedal osteomyelitis and the value of formal instruction in fluoroscopic procedures to decrease patient radiation dose, which has resulted in national scientific presentations and regional prizes. To provide a basic fund of knowledge for our residents and fellows, I have also collaborated with section members, and radiologists from outside VCU, on the writing and editing of a textbook, Rotations in Radiology: Musculoskeletal Imaging (Oxford University Press) (in press).

My focus of improving the quality of care also led to a multidisciplinary collaboration with leaders across the institution in the design, construction and oversight of the VCU Health Neuroscience, Orthopaedic and Wellness Center (the N.O.W. Center) in Henrico, Virginia in 2016. In this new model, the specialties work in collaborative clinical spaces including the musculoskeletal radiologist whose reading room lies in the center of the patient clinic. The ability of the radiologist to collaborate in the delivery of care at the time and place where the patient is seen has become a valued resource to physicians and other providers. In the future, I plan to work to fulfill the triple aim of health care, as defined by Donald Berwick: improving the individual experience of care; improving the health of populations; and reducing the per capita costs of care for populations. I will continue to work to achieve this by collaborating with other medical specialties and other groups to foster the right care environments and to document the ways we have and continue to further the triple aim in the literature and media.
