Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention

The VCU Radiology Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention (MSK) section has two full-time faculty who focus 100% on diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of the skeleton, ligaments, muscles and joints.   Both our MSK radiologists, Dr. Kevin Hoover and Dr. Curtis Hayes, are board certified by the American Board of Radiology.  They received their subspecialty training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  Staffing includes two dedicated MSK Fellows per year and an MRI Fellow who may provide staffing in 4 or 6 month blocks.

With over 25 years of subspecialty experience between them, our VCU Musculoskeletal radiologists have expertise in virtually all applicable radiological techniques, including MRI, CT, PET, sonography, and standard X-rays.  Examinations are interpreted and procedures performed at two different sites: downtown Richmond at VCU Medical Center and at the Stony Point multispecialty outpatient facility.

Advanced imaging tests are tailored and supervised by our physicians to ensure quality results and the highest level of patient care. Working closely with physicians in other specialties such as Orthopedics, Rheumatology, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Oncology, our experts use diagnostic imaging for diverse conditions such as sports related and other injuries, bone tumors, arthritis and joint replacement, infection, and metabolic disease.

Our radiologists have extensive experience with minimally invasive imaging guided procedures that include spine and joint injections for diagnosis and pain relief, aspirations, bone biopsies, and tumor ablations.  While the majority of these procedures are performed at Stony Point, those procedures requiring conscious sedation or an immediate pathologist consultation are performed downtown at the VCU Medical Center.
