Magnetic Resonance Imaging Fellowship
The VCU Department of Radiology offers a one-year fellowship in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This fellowship is geared towards learning all aspects of MR imaging and may include rotations in abdominal and pelvic MRI, cardiovascular MRI, musculoskeletal MRI and neuro MRI in variable combinations. The fellowship experience is flexible, allowing for training in desired areas of interest.
Fellows will learn how to develop and optimize MR protocols utilizing the most advanced MR imaging techniques in addition to interpreting MR studies. We have state-of-the-art imaging capabilities at multiple clinical sites. Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in all activities on a given rotation including non-vascular interventions.
Fellows will participate in section specific teaching activities and conferences, tumor boards and clinical conferences. The fellow may choose to participate in research activities, however, this is not a requirement. A range of MR teaching files are available for the fellow’s use.
Our training is aimed at providing diverse exposure to all aspects of MR imaging including all advanced MR applications. The fellow will learn MR protocol development and optimization as well as study interpretation. Optional experience with nonvascular interventions utilizing multimodality imaging guidance is also provided.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Fellowship
- VCU Health is the only comprehensive Level I Trauma Center in the city of Richmond and surrounding region certified in adult, pediatric, and burn trauma care. We also have a subspecialty environment with robust hepatology, transplant, urology, gynecology, surgical and oncology services including the VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- We provide a high level of subspecialty expertise with the most advanced imaging options. Our fellows are able to learn about all facets of MR imaging including specialized protocol development and optimization.
- Abdominal imagers work closely with providers in primary care, gastroenterology, hepatology, oncology, nephrology, urology, surgical oncology, OB/ GYN, bariatric surgery, trauma and general surgery.
- Musculoskeletal faculty members work closely with and play an integral role with orthopeadics, sports medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain management, and rheumatology. We have a robust orthopeadic department with over 48 practicing orthopeadic surgeons, The radiologists also work closely with physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), rheumatology, pain management, and sports medicine specialties.
- The Neuroradiology Section works closely with and plays an integral role in imaging patients from Neurology, Neurosurgery, ENT, and the Emergency Department, including the Stroke Program. They offer comprehensive experience with MR and MRA.
- The Cardiovascular Section provides experience with a large number of common and complex cardiac MRs, working closely with cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. The Cardiac MR Program established by the Radiology Department’s John Grizzard, M.D. in 2006 has expanded over the years and now averages 7 to 15 cardiac MRs per day.
- Fellows spend monthly blocks of time rotating in any or all of the following areas: body MRI, cardiovascular MRI, musculoskeletal MRI, and neuro MRI. Fellows have the flexibility to determine their rotations. Typically, each rotation is a minimum of three months and may be as long as six months. There is some flexibility in daily work assignments based on the fellow’s interest.
- Fellows will collaborate on weekly multidisciplinary conferences and tumor boards per rotation.
- We have a high daily volume of MRI exams performed at VCU Health's Main Hospital in downtown Richmond and at a variety of outpatient facilities throughout the region.
- Our diverse spectrum of pathology and strong associated clinical departments offer our fellows the ability to focus on MR imaging. Additionally, our flexibility allows fellows to adjust their elective time and daily focus as their learning objectives and career goals evolve.
- Clinical activities of our MRI fellows are primarily at VCU Health's Main Hospital.
- A total of 1- 2 MRI fellowship spots are available per year.
