Message from Department Chair

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the latest edition of our Image of Excellence newsletter. In the last edition, I outlined how we were managing our COVID-19 pandemic response and the profound operational changes we made to prevent community spread of the virus. Despite the challenges, we adapted well to protect our staff and patients while also providing critical medical imaging support to VCU Health.

As of January 28th, the first dose COVID-19 vaccination rate for Radiology faculty was 95 percent, exceeding VCU Health's goal for first dose vaccination rates. Our combined effort will help build team immunity, reducing the odds that a team member unknowingly spreads the virus.

In this newsletter, you will see our West Hospital expansion and learn more about the breast imaging services that we will soon be offering in the West End of Richmond. I am also proud to share a summary of professional achievements made by our Cardiothoracic Imaging faculty and to introduce our newest Musculoskeletal faculty member, Aram Salem, M.D.

Thank you for your continued grace and generosity. I hope you and your family are safe and healthy.

Be well,

~ Ann S. Fulcher, M.D., FACR, FSAR

Radiology Department Renovation and Expansion Updates

Our Main 3 renovation project is underway. This major construction project includes a new vascular interventional radiology suite with new equipment, a 5th interventional radiology room with expanded patient recovery space, and an interventional suite with dedicated CT and ultrasound. While we added a new CT scanner, we moved our MR scanners to Gateway Basement. Nuclear Medicine, which is located in Gateway 2, will also receive a new SPECT CT unit. New reading rooms will occupy the space formerly used as Main 3 faculty offices, which recently moved to West Hospital. The Radiology Conference Room also moved to West Hospital.

The Radiology Department now occupies the entire 2nd floor of the West Hospital and includes the majority of our faculty offices, administrative staff space, and the Radiology Residency Director’s office. Our new office furniture is in place and faculty members are starting to move in. Once complete, this expansion project will increase our presence and advance our capabilities in Richmond.
