Message from the Section Chief

Welcome to the Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention Section of the VCU Department of Radiology. Our fellowship-trained faculty members use state-of-the-art imaging technology to handle a full range of diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures related to the musculoskeletal system.

Overview

The musculoskeletal imaging and intervention (MSK) section diagnoses and treats patients with a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including inflammatory arthritis, orthopedic tumors and sports related conditions. We have two full-time faculty members who focus entirely on diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of the skeleton, ligaments, muscles and joints.

Our American Board of Radiology certified radiologists have more than 25 years of combined subspecialty experience in virtually all applicable radiological techniques, including:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Computed tomography (CT)
Positron emission tomography (PET)
Ultrasound
X-ray

In 2017, the MSK section performed and interpreted approximately 44,000 MSK exams (excluding ER cases). In addition to an array of diagnostic studies, MSK radiologists perform approximately 12–24 interventional procedures each day between its outpatient facilities at Stony Point, VCU Health Short Pump Pavilion, and inpatient services at the VCU Medical Center. The MSK section also performs spine procedures, including epidural steroid injections, selective nerve root blocks and facet injections.

Procedures and Technology

Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention

The musculoskeletal imaging and intervention (MSK) fellowship emphasizes all aspects and modalities related to musculoskeletal diagnostic imaging and imaging-guided intervention. Each year, we support two dedicated MSK fellows and one MRI fellow who may provide staffing in four- or six-month blocks. Our fellows work closely with physicians in other specialties, such as orthopedics, rheumatology, rehabilitation and physical medicine, emergency medicine, oncology, sports medicine. Fellows will also use diagnostic imaging for several conditions and injuries, including bone tumors, arthritis and joint replacement, infection and metabolic disease.
