Overview
The Division of Diagnostic Medical Physics provides physics expertise in support of diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine across the VCU Health System. Our board-certified medical physicists work throughout the lifecycle of imaging technologies, including system specification and acceptance testing, as well as ongoing quality management, radiation safety, and regulatory and accreditation compliance, to help ensure safe, reliable, and high-quality imaging.
Working in close collaboration with radiologists, technologists, administrators, and clinical teams, the division provides clinical services and consultation in support of patient care. As imaging technologies and clinical practice continue to evolve, the division remains committed to refining and standardizing testing procedures and expanding its role within the clinical environment.
The division also plays an active role in education and research by contributing to the training of medical physics graduate students, resident physicians, medical students, and technologists, and by supporting scholarly activity that advances the science and practice of medical imaging. Through these efforts, the Division of Diagnostic Medical Physics supports the Department of Radiology’s commitment to an Image of Excellence in patient care, education, and research.
Our medical physicists provide clinical physics support for diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine, including:
- Acceptance testing of imaging systems
- Ongoing performance evaluation and quality assurance of imaging equipment
- Imaging protocol optimization and standardization
- Patient dose monitoring and evaluation
- Radiation exposure assessment for patients and staff
- Consultation on radiation risk and safety practices
- Compliance testing for regulatory and accreditation requirements
- Development and review of imaging-related policies and procedures
- Support for accreditation and quality programs
- Design and specification of radiation shielding
- Evaluation and verification of installed shielding
